Course Info

As actors, the voice is one of our most relied-upon tools. But how well do you know your voice and all that it can do? This course is designed to offer a practical understanding of how the voice works, while also developing personal awareness of the connection between the voice, the body and the mind.

We will explore the relationship that relaxation, breath and physical alignment have with volume, tone, resonance and placement, while looking deeply into personal habits that can get support or hinder our work as actors.

Students will work with a chosen monologue, in addition to texts chosen by the instructor.

This class is physical in nature, so wear comfortable clothes & shoes, and bring writing materials.

Week-by-Week Outline

  • Class 1: Body-Breath-Mind-Voice (exploring the interconnected nature of the system)
  • Class 2: The Vocal Tract (the muscles that shape the sound)
  • Class 3: Dynamically Speaking (vocal dynamics and qualities)
  • Class 4: Speak the Speech! (speech sounds and their application to spoken text)
  • Class 5: Warm-up and Perform (putting it all together)
